Yes, a species of poppy is involved in opium and heroin production, but that doesn't mean any old poppy will get you high. While all poppyseeds contain some amount of morphine and codeine, in most species, it's a trace amount, and only present in the seeds for 20 days after the bloom appears.

The island of Crete sits in the Mediterranean Sea between Athens and the Egyptian coast, a long spit of land that was once home to a civilization of traders who definitely enjoyed poppies.
